Question #: 75
Topic #: 3

How does a Call Activity component differ from a Subprocess component?

Show Suggested Answer Hide Answer
Suggested Answer: A

https://docs.alfresco.com/process-services1.6/topics/call_activity.html

A call activity is used to execute another process definition as part of the current process instance.

The main difference between a sub-process and a call activity is that the call activity does not share context with the process instance. Process variables are explicitly mapped between the process instance and the call activity.

This question is making my head spin! I need to go for a coffee break and come back fresh. Maybe I'll find the answer in the bottom of my mug.

So, does that mean a Call Activity is always executed synchronously?

I agree with Adaline. A Subprocess component shares full process instance context, while a Call Activity does not.

A) A Call Activity does not share full process instance context. Interesting, I didn't know that. Sounds like it might be a bit more self-contained than a Subprocess.

C) A Call Activity can not be executed inline. Really? I always thought that was the whole advantage of using a Call Activity. Guess I need to brush up on my BPMN knowledge.

B) A Call Activity is always executed synchronously. Hmm, that's good to know. I guess that means it blocks the main process until it's done.

D) A Call Activity shares full process instance context. This makes sense to me, as that's the whole point of using a Call Activity, right?

Exactly. A Subprocess component creates a new process instance when it is called.

So, does that mean a Subprocess component does not share the full process instance context?

Yes, that's correct. A Call Activity allows you to reuse a subprocess within the same process instance.
