What is counted to determine the atomic number of an atom?

Show Suggested Answer Hide Answer
Suggested Answer: B

Protons located within the nucleus are counted to determine the atomic number of an atom. This is different than the atomic mass which is a count of the total count of neutrons and protons within a nucleus.

Protons, duh! If you can't count those, how will you know how many electrons to draw in the Bohr model?

Without counting protons, it would be hard to know the atomic number.

Haha, this question is a real atomic bomb. I bet the answer is 'all of the above' just to confuse us!

Wait, wait, wait... is the answer actually the neutrons? I'm pretty sure that's what determines the isotope, not the atomic number.

I agree with Cherrie, the number of protons determines the atomic number of an atom.

The nucleus, of course! How else would you know how many protons are in the atom?

I'm pretty sure it's the electrons that determine the atomic number. Didn't we learn that in high school chemistry?

I remember learning that in chemistry class too. It's definitely the electrons.

Definitely the protons! Gotta count those positive charges to figure out the atomic number.
