Actual exam question for IBM's S1000-007 exam
Question #: 46
Topic #: 1
[All S1000-007 Questions]

A customer runs smit on the AIX command line and receives the message below:

1800-005 SMIT requires a minimum of 24 line by 80 column output display.

What can be done to resolve the error?

Show Suggested Answer Hide Answer
Suggested Answer: C

The root user is not required to run SMIT, and the size of the window is the only factor that determines the minimum output display requirements. According to the IBM AIX v7 Administrator Specialty Study Guide (page 9-3), SMIT requires 24 lines and 80 columns for the output display for successful execution.

Ah, the age-old SMIT display size problem. I'm going to have to go with C) Resize their window. Seems like the most straightforward solution, unless they're running SMIT on a potato or something.

User2: Agreed, that error usually means the display size is too small.

Hmm, I'm a bit torn between B) and C). I guess it depends on whether the customer has the ability to resize their window or not. Either way, I hope they figure it out soon - I hate it when SMIT doesn't cooperate!

I'm going with B) Change their DISPLAY environment variable. Sounds like a good way to fix the problem without resizing the window. Although, I do wonder if the root user has a bigger window or something.

I'm not sure, but I think setting the TERM variable to smit might also work.
