Actual exam question for NABP's NAPLEX exam
Question #: 61
Topic #: 4
[All NAPLEX Questions]

A 27-year-old female with ovarian cancer is undergoing chemotherapy. She develops subsequent renal failure.

Which of the following drugs is most likely responsible for this?

Show Suggested Answer Hide Answer
Suggested Answer: A

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is an example of postrenal acute kidney injury (AKI). Postrenal AKI, as the name suggests, involves an effect 'post' or 'beyond' the kidney, to problems that emerge downstream from the kidney. BPH is one such example of that. Other examples include kidney stones, bladder stones and bladder cancer.

Wow, Cisplatin is really putting the 'fail' in 'renal failure'! Gotta be careful with that one.

Hmm, Cisplatin sounds like the culprit. Kidneys and chemo, not a good combo. Maybe we should start a support group for overworked oncology kidneys.

Cisplatin, no doubt. It's like a double-edged sword - kills the cancer but can also take down the kidneys. Tricky stuff!
